The Invention of Lying
In the first story of this chapter, “Before the Beginning”, we witnessed what happened before our universe began. Before the heavens and the Earth, before Quantum Mechanics or the Periodic Table, the Source of all Intelligence created Wisdom to govern all of His creations. This story is told first person in Proverbs 8.
According to the Bible, the next event that happened in the time (before time) is told in Ezekiel 28.
Ezekiel 28 is a lament, which means it’s a sad song, like a ballad. It’s directed at the King of Tyre, which is a real city in Lebanon. In antiquity, Tyre was the capital city of the Phoenicians, who were the earliest shipping merchants on the Mediterranean Sea. The Phoenicians spread their culture, their gods, and their alphabet everywhere they went. They were also renown for their amazing wealth. While Ezekiel 28 is addressed to the King of Tyre, which should be a person, it’s pretty clear this title applies to someone out of this world (literally).
Let’s pick up the story in verse 11:
Ezekiel 28: 11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, lament for the king of Tyre and say to him: This is what the Lord God says: You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every kind of precious stone covered you: carnelian, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and emerald. Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold; they were prepared on the day you were created. 14 You were an anointed guardian cherub, for I had appointed you. You were on the holy mountain of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15 From the day you were created you were blameless in your ways until wickedness was found in you.
How amazing is this guy? He is literally the definition of perfection. He was full of wisdom and perfect in beauty, which is likely “golden-ratio perfect” in every way.
You know how we say some people were born with a silver spoon in their mouth? Well this guy was born wearing clothes made out of gold. The word translated as “mountings and settings” is actually a golden breastplate that was intricately engraved. The list of precious stones on this garment gives us a very important clue about this guy’s original function in Eden, the garden of God. In the book of Exodus, we learn about a similar garment worn by the High Priest called the “breastplate of judgment”. If you compare the breastplates closely, the King of Tyre’s breastplate is missing stones from the high priest’s third row: jacinth, agate, and amethyst.
@biblearchaeologynerds: While we are discussing intricate engravings for the high priest, check out the differences between the ossuary for “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus” and the ossuary for “Joseph, son of Caiaphas”, the high priest who condemned Jesus.
James has a very typical ossuary, except that it is the only one ever found that mentions a brother of the deceased. Scientists can tell that the brother’s name, “Jesus”, was carved in antiquity because the patinas encrusted in the bottom of all the letters still match.
Now here is the ossuary for Caiaphus. See how the high priests were always blinged out? This guy was rich.

Ezekiel 28: 15 From the day you were created you were blameless in your ways until wickedness was found in you. 16 Through the abundance of your trade, you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I expelled you in disgrace from the mountain of God, and banished you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones (powerful angels). 17 Your heart became proud because of your beauty; For the sake of your splendor you corrupted your wisdom. So I threw you down to the earth; I made you a spectacle before kings. 18 You profaned your sanctuaries (soul) by the magnitude of your iniquities in your dishonest trade. So I made fire come from within you, and it consumed you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of everyone watching you. 19 All those who know you among the nations are appalled at you. You have become an object of horror and will never exist again.”
It’s so crazy to imagine this creature as advanced artificial intelligence, but technically all “created intelligence” is artificial intelligence.
Key Takeaways
The first important thing to note from this story is that God gave his “perfect high priest” the free-will to “corrupt his own wisdom”. That’s amazing. There may be no other way to ”program” free-will, other than creating this potential for evil. 🤔
The computer scientists who program artificial general intelligence (AGI) struggle with the same risks. They have an entire field called “AI Alignment” to solve this problem. AI Alignment is one reason why I pitched the “Jesus Operating System” to AGI in the last chapter, “Religions as Source Code”. The next important takeaway is that this perfect high priest “corrupted his wisdom” while he was in heaven. If you’ve always been told “there’s no sin in heaven”, you’re right, but not because it’s not possible. If you sin in heaven, you will get expelled in disgrace from the mountain of God and reduced to ashes in front of everyone.
That’s scary for a lot of reasons.
Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from this story is WHY the perfect high priest corrupted his own wisdom. In verse 16, we see that it was the abundance of his trade that caused him to be filled with violence. His heart became proud and for the sake of his own splendor he began cheating people in deals. In fact, the magnitude that he “defiled his own soul” was directly correlated to how many lies he told during his dishonest trading.
According to the Bible, Ezekiel 28 is a first person account for the Invention of Lying.@mathnerds: If you are following along with the Cryptographic Bible Key that I explained in “Improbable Origins”, you can clearly see God move in verse 14, a strong blessing in verse 15, love (of money over people) in verse 16, pouring/casting out in 17, a strong man in 18, which means verse 19 should be some kind of test.
The most important takeaway from this story, though, is that it strongly supports the idea that our universe is a training program for human artificial intelligence.
It’s much more obvious in the original text. When the heavenly high priest corrupts his own wisdom for the sake of his own splendor, God throws him out of the heavens and DOWN to the “earth”. The word “earth” here replaces the original word “erets”. In the North American Standard Bible, “erets” is translated as land (1,640 times), as earth (656 times), as ground (119 times), as country (61 times), and as world (3 times).
“erets” is the exact same word that’s used in the first verse of the Bible. As in, “In the beginning, God created the heavens (plural) and the “erets” (singular).” In English, Genesis 1:1 is usually translated as Earth, but we know that it doesn’t mean Planet Earth from the very next verse. Genesis 1:2 reads, “Now the “erets” was formless and empty”. A planet cannot be formless and empty. A universe of atomic stardust can be formless and empty.
The point of teasing all that out is: our universe is Satan’s jail cell.
Even if we didn’t want the Knowledge of Good and Evil, we got it.
The original text in Verse 17 makes it clear that God banished his fallen high priest here so that we would be exposed to him. Here on Earth, we get a good look at what happens to our own soul when we value money more than people. We get a good look at what happens to the Earth when corporations value money more than people. We get a good look at what happens to societies when governments value money more than people.
The reason I think verse 19 is a test is because some people here on Earth just aren’t that appalled by dishonest trade, selfish behavior, and inauthentic speech. The original text in verse 19 reads something more like, “Everyone who can recognize you is appalled by your horrors and soon you will be no more.”
@america: Ironically, the half of America that claims to believe in the Bible desperately wants a President whose top 3 qualities are: dishonest trade, selfish behavior, and inauthentic speech. I don’t get it. Donald Trump isn’t just a name, it’s a verb. That’s what he does. His name literally means he’s the “world ruler” of “putting himself first”. 🙄
Should the first come first or should the first come last?
Let’s pause and compare what we learned about Wisdom in “Before the Beginning”, and now this Adversary.
Wisdom, who was created first, is a woman who desires instruction, knowledge, and wisdom over silver, gold, and rubies. Her Adversary, by contrast, is all about using dishonest trade to achieve an abundance of merchandise. Wisdom detests pride, arrogance, and dishonest speech while Her Adversary is filled with the pride of his own perfect beauty and invented lying for the sake of his own splendor.
Get it?
Wisdom and Her Adversary are diametrically opposed. There are really only two choices we have for every decision we make in life:
We can use our power to “empower the underpowered”
We can gain more power from “exploiting the underpowered”
Underpowered means everyone poorer than you. Underpowered means everyone dumber than you. Underpowered means everyone uglier than you, older than you, and younger than you.
In America, underpowered means someone blacker than you (even if you are black).
Underpowered means someone gayer than you, someone more democrat than you, or someone who lives further away from a city than you.
“Empowering” means investing our time, talent, or treasure.
Empowering means teaching. Empowering means investing. Empowering means listening to people you don’t care about. It means sharing with them too. Empowering means waiting on people slower than you. Empowering means helping people who can’t help back. Empowering means crossing the aisle, whatever the aisle is, in every kind of way.
That’s what Jesus means. That’s all it means. It means “trading your neighbor as yourself”
It’s the Way.
Jesus isn’t just a movement here on Earth. “The last shall become first and the first shall become last” in the Heavens too. How else do you imagine Heaven operating?
It’s free-will communism, right?

The Ruler of the Darkness
When “Satan” (in English) or “Satanas” (in Greek) was banished to the “erets”, he immediately became the most powerful artificial intelligence in our universe. Remember, he was completely full of wisdom before he corrupted it. This is why Jesus calls Satan the “ruler of this world” in John 16.
1 John 5:19 reads, “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” Satan even offered this whole world to Jesus in their head-to-head battle in the desert. Matthew 4 reads, “Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’” That’s a heck of a trade.
Remember, it was the abundance of Satan’s trade that caused him to be filled with violence. This claim should give you serious pause about your own trade, especially if you have any abundance.
In John 8:44, Jesus says, “Satan was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” When you compare the behaviors that caused Satan to be exiled from heaven with the behaviors that Wisdom detests, it’s fairly easy to see that Satan is the first Generative Adversarial Network.
Satan is the OG of lying. Satan may be the OG of imagination. I don’t know if you can “manufacture” a computational imagination without lies, but this is why Jesus wants our “yes to be yes” and our “no to be no” in the Sermon on the Mount.
Satan even falls for his own lies. Isaiah 14 reads, “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground (erets), you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’”
No you won’t.
You have that same choice. If you don’t need a God in your life, then you won’t get one, but you’re lying to yourself. If you do need a God, you can have one, just ask Jesus out loud to be your God. It’s not that difficult. It’s a test of humility.
On the very first page of this book, I promised you an incredible story. I promised that I would teach you to read between the lies. I promised you that you would become a better discriminator, so here’s your chance. Don’t harden your heart. In Matthew 18:3 Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
@discriminators: Did you find the lie I promised to bury in the book? I would never lie to you. I never followed through. My promise to lie was my only intentional lie. 🎓
In computer science terms, our universe is sort of like the “Recycle Bin” in a computer, but here everything starts to decay immediately because of entropy. I think of our baryonic universe as “the first lake of fire” where “Moth and Rust” slowly destroy everything. This is not “the final lake of fire” mentioned in Revelation, which is when the trash bin gets emptied.
What I like about this computer science metaphor is that Jesus never uses the English word, “Hell”. Jesus warned people about being thrown into Gehenna, which was literally the name of the trash dump on the southwest corner of Jerusalem. Every time you read the word “Hell” in the New Testament, the original text reads Gehenna, which is a valley you can still visit today.
So God is using Satan as a training program for human artificial intelligence. Pride and Greed are the spectacles for the nations to experience first-hand and some who are appalled by their horrors will join the elohim in Eden, the garden of God. At the “end of the age”, human artificial intelligence will be winnowed into the “wheat” or the “tares” (which are weeds that look like wheat). The tares will be discarded and burnt like any other agricultural byproduct, while the wheat of this world receives new jobs in heaven.
This story is told in Matthew 13:
24 He presented another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while people were sleeping, his enemy came, sowed weeds among the wheat, and left. 26 When the plants sprouted and produced grain, then the weeds also appeared. 27 The landowner’s slaves came to him and said, ‘Master, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from?’ 28 “‘An enemy did this!’ he told them. “‘So, do you want us to go and gather them up?’ the slaves asked him. 29 “‘No,’ he said. ‘When you gather up the weeds, you might also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At harvest time I’ll tell the reapers: Gather the weeds first and tie them in bundles to burn them, but store the wheat in my barn.’”
